As such, it’s definitely not too soon to start preparing, whether it be organizing an office party, picking out a new St. Patrick’s day outfit, or planning a dream vacation to Ireland. This doesn’t mean you should know your exact itinerary for the day, or need start checking weather forecasts for March 17th, but being prepared could mean the difference between buying an awesome St. Patrick’s day t-shirt before it sells out, or wearing that old off-green sweater that doesn’t fit anymore.

Also, keep in mind that in 2012 St. Patrick’s day falls on Saturday, so you are quite realistically going to be celebrating it on Friday as well. But before we start, it seems appropriate to mention a brief history of the “Kiss Me I’m Irish” slogan. The saying originated as a reference to the legend of the Blarney Stone, which, when kissed, gives the kisser the gift of eloquence. Since the Blarney stone is inset high up in the walls of the Blarney Castle, and kissing it is no easy feat, the concept of kissing an Irish person as a suitable substitute has been offered as a cheeky joke. The expression is also sometimes used to refer to the proverbial “luck of the Irish”, which could be transfered via a kiss.

Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is, quite literally the grand daddy of themall. It was commissioned in 1737 by the Irish Society of Boston and predatesthe first such parade in Ireland by some 200 hundred years. The parade is knownfor it’s floats, traditional performers, and an over-the-top atmosphere thatdraws almost one million people. Of course, Boston’s parade probably owes muchto the fact that Massachusetts has the highest Irish descendancy rate in thewhole country, at almost 25%.

Chicago is another American metropolis that draws upon a deep rooted St.Patrick’s day tradition. Its first parade kicked off in 1843, and the cityhasn’t looked back since, drawing visitors from out of town to see floats,dancers, and other performers. As one of the widely known hallmarks ofChicago’s festivities, the city dies the Chicago River bright green using fortypounds of environmentally safe dye.

New York City boasts the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in terms of turnout,as it snakes its way through middle and upper Manhattan, past St. Patrick’sCathedral on 50th street. This year the parade will celebrate’s its 250thanniversary, so expect things to get extra special in the city that neversleeps.

Despite its considerable distance from the Emerald Isle, San Francisco has beenhosting St. Patrick’s day parades since 1852, and is the biggest suchdestination on the West Coast. San Francisco fairs and festivals have alwaysstood out, and this year’s parade promises not to disappoint. Just remember tocircle an earlier date on your calendar — the city holds the parade a little early, on March 12th.

Dublin, Ohio earns an honorary mention on our list due to the symbolicassociation with Ireland’s capital. The namesake town draws a heady crowd of20,000 on March 12th, despite having only 40,000 residents, and wows visitorswith just about 100 floats and other exciting performances.

Other memorable St. Patrick’s Day destinations include Philadelphia, Savannah,Scranton, Kansas City, and Hotsprings, and many other towns and cities, whichwe couldn’t possibly have enough space to mention in one place!
